"Fulfil your potential ... then fuck off ."
This illustration by David Shrigley has been my central inspiration. I think of life, death, growth and time when looking at this. I began exploring these concepts through sculptural line drawings - string, wool, threads, washing lines, tapes, etc.
"Mind String".
Exploring absense and presence through sculptural line drawing.
The piece of installation I decided to include in my final piece were these two "mug holders", tied together with a few of my old guitar strings. In the early stages of this project, I had picked up one of these small, wooden, green objects from a cheapy gift shop down by wellgate. To me, I had to buy it to play with in this project as it reminded me of the washing poles in my garden back home; my mum had painted them a dark, forest green. I didn't even realise the real purpose: a mug holder. After discussing my thoughts in a group, it was brought up how I could look at memory; how I associated one object with another through a memory: my mum having painted these garden poles. So I have explored how to change the use of a domestic object, transforming it into something completely different. An artist famous for this being Bill Woodrow:
It just so happens that one of his most famous pieces feature two objects which are completely relevant to what I have been exploring: guitar and washing machine.
FINAL Set Up in Studio/"Gallery space":
In the end, may be the one print would have been enough, so that the viewer would focus on the detail in this A2 photograph, however I am pleased with the result. Not done photography professionally before so was unsure about how to display prints and tackle all the technical terms the printing place threw at me before I even got to this stage, so overall, it was a healthy challenged I faced.
